The foil and tail of this design reveals its pedigree in the tradition of Hawaiian rounded pins, but its length and outline gives it an advantage in small surf. The design was conceived back in 2016 after Sean Arakawa had fallen in love with his 8’0 Avis that summer. He continued to ride the 8’0 funboard into our winter season on the North Shore. As he pushed it into larger waves, he found he wanted something as fun and effortless as the Avis, but with less board to swing around and an outline more tuned for barrels and waves with power. What resulted was the Holy Moli, drawing inspiration from the Hawaiian name for the seafaring Albatross and shear stoke. This board knows no bounds. She has a cool name and we just referred to the board as such ever since. It is essentially your performance thruster disguised as a mini tank—longboard looks but a shortboard approach. Its design brings out elements of trim, glide, drive, carve, power, and smooth style. Effortless, loose, and surprisingly responsive, it is a funboard that will take you anywhere. There is a lot of curve in the shape that allows for a very large sweet spot and comfy ride in what would otherwise be tight spaces. Scoot a little forward, and there is a speedy section of the rocker that loves a good trim line and can help you sneak into a few extra waves. The Avis will make you think twice before you grab your shortboard.
