The challenge was to see how far we could push the rocker without compromising speed and flow. It seems a bit counter intuitive to take a high rocker approach to weak or small waves, but a long time ago I had a model called the Viper with a lot of rocker that was surprisingly quick and forgiving. It would self correct when you over committed the rail making it easy to ride, easy to surf. That was our goal: super reactive, speed generating, and yet easy to surf.

This time Nat suggested we ignore the measurements and draw the bottom contours exclusively by eye. It was the first time I drew curves with the rocker measurements covered from view. I found it to be quite liberating to trust eyes alone. I was encouraged after the first prototype performed about 95% of the goal. All it took was a little feedback and one slight modification to the second version, and Shaydo said we hit the mark.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0571/8074/9897/files/Remedy_510_1066867_DSC6028_6f94c3e7-3e6c-4e6c-8825-9c1cf0d22d3e.png?v=1764968077
soop-bowl
Soop Bowl

After the Silmaril, our next goal was to work on a squash tail design that performed in weak, small waves. In November of 2022, Alonso Correa asked us to start developing a performance short board design for him to compete with in small waves for the 2023 season on the QS. After 3 months of testing and design modifications, we dialed this one in and sent it home with Alonso. Straight out of the gates, this board started reaping heat wins in South and Central America.

The Soop Bowl is similar in approach to the Silmaril, except this one is fine-tuned for waves that lack in power. It's deep single concave with a slightly straighter tail (exit curve) that maintains speed out of turns, and carries through fat sections. It's easy to ride, and although it is primarily designed for open face waves, it feels sparky when hitting the lip. The lively pop when weighting and unweighting make it a great board for boosting airs.

"The Silmaril marks the beginning of an exciting time in our surfboard design journey. And like many worthwhile things, it was birthed out of adversity. We knew we needed to improve our lineup, so we spent 11 months in a head down, stroke till you croak focused effort with the whole factory team.

The first step was finding a key team rider/point man to work closely with our two-man design team (Nat Woolley and myself) as we developed this new batch of shortboards. We called up Shayden Pacarro and went to work. As we built prototype after prototype, his skill, sensitivity, understanding, and clearly defined performance goals gave us the accurate and systematic feedback we needed. Shaydo was looking for a power surfer’s blade—a fast and drivey shortboard that gripped and accelerated when he pushed on its rail, and with a subtle shift in weight, would corner off the bottom for a vertical attack. Now 12 months later, Shaydo has proven himself to be the most astute test pilot I‘ve worked with in 30 years (since Derek and Michael Ho).”- Eric Arakawa

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0571/8074/9897/files/Silmaril_511_1054187_DSC5947_091b8e05-2dd8-47ab-886c-808952c7dc89.png?v=1764730305
mysto
Mysto

This mid-length is a rail surferʻs dream: buttery carves with the speed and glide of a twin. A reverse vee bottom allows a smooth seamless transitions rail to rail despite its extra width, and pivots tight off the pin tail when sharp direction changes are necessary. It loves an open, carvable face on those mushy days, but fin placement and our refined performance rail give this board a remarkable reliability when it comes to hollow and critical waves. The reverse vee also gives the rider a smoother ride and more control in bumpy conditions. This board is surprisingly effortless and fast for its relatively bulky dimensions. We just took the RP model and tuned it for small waves. Raphael Castro was riding his RP in everything—and loving it. After getting a taste for it in small conditions, he felt its potential to be just what he wanted in a shortboard. So he shot us a call and last year we got to work making just a few tweaks to his favorite 6’2 RP. He wanted to keep the drive and hold that he had grown to love, but add a little more pop and liveliness. Add a little width here, a little extra concave there, and in no time it was deadly sharp in small waves.

Eric is constantly making these sorts of special adjustments in custom orders, but it ends up being a sort of secret menu within a model. The Bandit was one of our most popular models back when Andy was on tour and he himself would order one every year. After Stab Magazine did an edit featuring one from Andy’s last quiver, we got a lot of inquiries from old fans of the board. The original design files were unusable so our only choice was to find a reference board and draw a new file from scratch. Since the model itself existed in a few different variations, we had some options. Andy’s personal was still in the attic, so it seemed pretty fitting to use his as the reference for the new master file. If the RP is our F1 car, this is our go-cart: super accessible, easy to control, and an insane amount of fun.

The model was born when Kekoa Cazimero wanted his 4’11 Stubby (father of the Half Pint) stretched out to ride in all sorts of small wave conditions. What was meant to be a one-off design ended up connecting with many surfers looking for a fast, easy-riding feel that sticks to your feet. After it had a good run for some years, we tried to freshen it up and make adjustments which became the Expresso and the Double smoked models.
